We are seeking a motivated, 'hands on', electronic field technician with experience in maintaining, installing, and repairing electronic and mechanical equipment situated in varying outdoor environments (including alpine, coastal, arid, fertile, suburban, regional and offshore areas). The successful applicant should possess sound knowledge of common environmental degradation on outdoor electronic systems, and an ability to fault find systemically using standard test equipment. They should display an appreciation for the high-level strategic view of the observing network but primarily possess the ability to operate at the technician level. Must be willing to travel regularly to remote parts of Victoria.

The Melbourne Hub is the Bureau of Meteorology's Victorian maintenance centre. Staff based at the Melbourne Hub travel far and wide across Victoria, utilising 4WD's, planes, boats and helicopters to maintain all the Victorian BoM Observation networks. This includes:

  • Doppler Rain Radars
  • Automatic Weather Stations (AWS)
  • Upper-Air monitoring systems (Sounding Balloons)
  • Flood warning / rainfall monitoring systems
  • Communications, telemetry and instrumentation systems
  • Conversing with co-operative observers (manual weather readings) and volunteer rainfall readers.
