Advanced Recreation Officer

About the role This role designs, implements and evaluates a variety of recreational, diversional and social activities to improve or maintain the physical and mental functioning of Gailes Community Care Unit residents. This role will be required to work all shifts as per a request-based roster.

The key responsibilities of the role are :

  • Under the supervision of a clinician and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, plan, document, implement and evaluate a comprehensive recreational therapy program appropriate to residents needs.
  • Demonstrate a person-centred approach in assessment of recreation therapy needs.
  • Supervise residents undertaking recreational or leisure activities to ensure their well-being and safety and to maintain a safe working environment.

About you

  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement and evaluate innovative recreation programs suited to the needs and abilities of residents with a mental illness and in keeping with organisational objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to observe residents behaviour during recreational activities and report these observations to the clinicians and wider team.
  • Ability to work with mínimal supervision for day to day activities and show initiative in the area of recreational activities.
  • Ability to identify priorities, plan and implement programs effectively, anticipate and solve problems, balance resources and cost effectively manage time.
  • Ability to work harmoniously within the multi disciplinary team
  • Possess a high level of communication skills (written and oral) with residents and staff. This includes providing assertive and active supports to encourage residents to achieve their recreational, diversional and social goals.
  • A commitment to operational and professional supervision as well as continuous professional development.
  • Initiative in learning and contributing to service improvement activities.

Mandatory Requirements :

  • Vaccinated against, and remain vaccinated against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) as outlined in the Health Employment Directive NO. 01/16
  • Possession of an Advanced Certificate in Disability Studies or Certificate IV in Health and Community Services (Diversional Therapy) or Certificate IV in Diversional Therapy or Certificate IV in Community Services (Leisure and Lifestyle) or Certificate IV in Leisure and Health or a similar relevant qualification.
