The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking an experienced Assistant Retail Manager with a flair for merchandising to join our Commercial team for an 18-month fixed term contract, with possibility of extension.

The Assistant Retail Manager will work with the Retail Manager in the daily operations of the retail shop at the Australian National Maritime Museum. With a flair for visual merchandising, the Assistant Retail Manager will lead the casual POS team in sales and customer service and assist in growing the online shop and wholesale business.

High level overview of responsibilities :

  • Assist the Retail Manager with efficient management and operation of the retail and merchandise business, including fulfilling duties of the Retail Manager during holidays or sick leave.
  • Assist the Retail Manager to ensure the shop is adequately staffed for all periods especially peak periods.
  • Lead and train POS staff in customer service, sales, and product knowledge.
  • Assist the Retail Manager in visual merchandising, promotional displays, cleanliness of shop, and monitoring stock levels to ensure the shop is always well stocked, including providing monthly reports.
  • Assist the Retail Manager with financial reporting processes; including but not limited to EOD and EOM procedures.
  • Take responsibility for the health and safety of staff and visitors within the shop.

Selection Criteria :

  • Experience working in a successful commercial business.
  • Experience in leading teams with demonstrated ability to supervise, motivate, and train staff.
  • Creative ability to present attractive visual merchandise displays to stimulate interest and increase sales.
  • Experience in retail operations, monitoring and maintaining stock levels, EOD cash handling procedures, and preparing financial reports.
  • Strong sales and customer service skills with excellent presentation and communication skills..
  • Able to work weekends and public holidays when required.
